What to Expect by Age
Young children. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first dental visit by age 1, or within six months of the first tooth. These early visits are mostly about comfort, a tooth count, and a sticker.
School-age kids and teens. Sealants on the back teeth, fluoride treatments, orthodontic monitoring, and sports mouthguards as needed.
Adults. Cleanings every 6 months, X-rays once a year, and treatment for the issues that come with adult life: gum disease screening, replacement of aging fillings, cosmetic concerns, and night guards for grinders.
Older adults. Periodontal health, replacement of missing teeth with implants or bridges, updating old crowns, and addressing dry mouth and dentures.
